Through community, The John Robert Lewis Blackbelt development process seeks to holistically improve the lives of Alabama Blackbelt communities individually as well as collectively. address the challenges preventing Blackbelt communities of Alabama from thriving physically, spiritually, economically, educationally, and socially.
A multidisciplinary research group, the Think Tank, advises the (JRL) Blackbelt Development Process Steering Committee by identifying community issues, engaging experts, and proposing solutions. It conducts surveys, hosts public meetings quarterly, and privately convenes to report to the Steering Committee.
The Steering Committee, comprised of Chairs and Co-Chairs from seven key areas, addresses concerns raised by the Think Tank Group and other entities. It conducts research, proposes solutions, collaborates with local organizations to prevent service duplication, and assists the Consortium Board in setting project goals. Regular community meetings determine needs and priorities. The Steering Committee meets quarterly with the interlocking consortium.
The Interlocking Consortium, consisting of external and internal stakeholders, aims to acquire resources and tools to address barriers identified by the Think Tank Group and validated by the Steering Committee. Comprising representatives from seven key areas, it convenes quarterly to explore projects, policy matters, network activation, and funding opportunities.
501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to support wholistic revitalization of impoverished communities in Selma and surrounding areas in the Blackbelt of Alabama. (Funding stream for John Robert Lewis Black Belt development process.)
Community leaders organized block by block thought the Blackbelt of Alabama with input from grassroots view to aid and enhance vision development and the strategic planning process.
